British conductor, Paul Wingfield, is a versatile and collaborative musician who works widely at the UK’s leading opera companies. Impressed by his energetic and insightful performances, his work is highly regarded by colleagues, critics and audiences alike.

Paul worked as a conductor and repetiteur on the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, where he was contracted from 2012-14.

At ROH, he conducted Mozart and Salieri (Rimsky-Korsakov) and El gato con botas (Montsalvatge) in the Linbury Studio Theatre. He also conducted the orchestras of the Royal Opera House and of Welsh National Opera in critically-acclaimed main stage performances including Die Zauberflöte and La Favorite, and lunchtime concerts with Southbank Sinfonia and CHROMA.

Paul has acted as assistant conductor at ROH on Carmen, Gloriana and Le Nozze di Figaro and joined the Royal Opera music staff for numerous productions including, Die Walküre, The Minotaur, La Bohème, Tosca, Don Carlo, La Rondine, Capriccio, Parsifal, Don Giovanni, Die Frau ohne Schatten, and Manon Lescaut.

He was mentored by Sir Antonio Pappano and has worked with many leading conductors including, Sir Simon Rattle, Semyon Bychkov, Nicola Luisotti, Paul Daniel and Sir Andrew Davies.

Paul read Music at Oxford University, and trained as a conductor and repetiteur at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the National Opera Studio. Conducting engagements include work with the Royal Opera House, Philharmonia Orchestra, The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Ballet, Welsh National Opera, Birmingham Opera Company, Garsington Opera, Iford Arts, Opera Holland Park and Opera North.

Paul considers coaching and education to be an important part of his output and works regularly with the Learning & Participation team at the Royal Opera House, acting as a frequent guest presenter. He has been Head of Vocal & Operatic Studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire since 2017.
